Description

The East Java Basin, as described in this book, is a combination of two Tertiary sedimentary basins: the North East Java (Jawa Timur Utara) and the Kendeng Basins. The East Java Basin is well-known for its overpressure zones and is also considered a complex basin due to its tectonic history and sediment deposition. The southern area has relatively shallow top overpressure while the northern area has a relatively deeper top of overpressure. The boundary between these two areas generally follows a WNW to ESE direction, aligned with the northern shoreline of East Java and the southern shoreline of Madura Island.

During the Early Miocene period, the East Java Basin began to experience compressional tectonics which continues to Recent period. This compressional tectonic is interpreted as the primary cause of overpressure together with the rapid sedimentation. Quantitative analysis of the in-situ stress magnitude demonstrates that tectonic-induced overpressure generation is indeed a significant factor in the East Java Basin. In-situ stress analysis further suggests that the East Java Basin is predominantly governed by a strike-slip stress regime.
