Synopsis
Indonesia is a vast archipelago spanning three time zones along the equator, stretching from west to east as far as the distance between San Francisco and New York. Its geological complexity arises from the interaction of multiple tectonic plates, resulting in diverse geological features such as continental shelves, oceanic basins, active volcanoes, seismic zones, and rich natural resources, including minerals, hydrocarbons, coal, and geothermal energy. Understanding this complexity requires expertise in various geoscience disciplines, including plate tectonics, marine geology, stratigraphy, volcanology, and geophysics.
This book serves as an introduction to Indonesia’s complex geology, providing an overview of major geological structures with a focus on Tertiary sedimentary basins and their hydrocarbon potential. Since the publication of Van Bemmelen’s The Geology of Indonesia (1949), extensive new geological data have been gathered through systematic mapping, academic research, and resource exploration. The Geological Survey of Indonesia has played a key role in producing geological maps at scales of 1:100,000 for Java and Madura and 1:250,000 for the rest of Indonesia. Advances in plate tectonics, along with studies by international research groups and extensive seismic and well data from the petroleum industry, have significantly expanded our understanding of the region’s geology.
Based on regional geological studies conducted by the author for various oil companies, this book presents a descriptive analysis of Indonesia’s geological framework. It relies primarily on systematic geological maps from the Geological Survey of Indonesia, supplemented by industry data and published research. While no comprehensive synthesis of Indonesia’s geology is attempted, the book follows established nomenclature to outline key tectonic and sedimentary structures, offering insights into the country’s geological diversity and resource potential.
